Seaweed Foraging

Seaweed Foraging Adventure (Sonoma Coast)

Seaweed Foraging Adventure: Sonoma Coast

Examine underwater life with our resident seaweed expert. Heidi has been sustainably harvesting and selling seaweed for over a decade: she knows what to pick, how to pick it, and most importantly, how to make it taste delicious! This two to three-hour guided morning foray will meet on the beach in Sonoma, and be followed by a talk on what you collected, the science of seaweed, and how to cook your catch. You can expect to collect up to 10 lbs. of edible seaweed. This is a coastal forage during low tide. You won't need to get in the ocean but we recommend wearing rain boots.

Please note this event is for ages 9 and up.

Seaweed Foraging Class

Seaweed Foraging Adventure (Half Moon Bay)

Seaweed Foraging Adventure: Half Moon Bay

Explore the beach during a low tide with Tanya and learn to identify different sea vegetables and their healing properties, like how some protect against nuclear radiation. While exploring the tidepools, you will talk about ethical and sustainable practices, Native American rights to access as a food and cultural resource, and spend time wild tending and foraging the seaweeds that grow here. You will leave with recipes, a variety of the sea vegetables we harvest (up to 10 lbs!), and a chance to taste some different seaweeds. We will likely see and can harvest kombu, pacific dulse, feather boa, rockweed, turkish towel, black larch, Iridea (aka rainbow leaf), and nori. This is a low tide forage. You won't need to get in the ocean, but we recommend wearing shoes with great traction.
